Can You Use Whitening Strips With Invisalign In North Tampa?
When patients at Miller Orthodontics ask if they can use whitening strips during Invisalign treatment we understand why. Many people want to straighten and whiten at the same time, make the most of their orthodontic treatment. The short answer is no, traditional whitening strips are not recommended during Invisalign treatment but there are better options to whiten your teeth while wearing aligners. Let us explain why whitening strips aren’t ideal during Invisalign treatment and what options work better.
Traditional whitening strips are thin, flexible pieces of plastic coated with a peroxide based whitening gel. You apply them directly to your teeth where they stay in place for a specified amount of time, usually 30 minutes to an hour depending on the product. The problem with using whitening strips during Invisalign treatment is they don’t work well with the aligners. You can’t wear your Invisalign aligners while the whitening strips are on your teeth because the strip needs to be in direct contact with your tooth surface to work. This means you’d have to have your aligners out for the duration of the whitening treatment.
Since Invisalign aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day to work effectively, using whitening strips creates a compliance issue. If you’re removing your aligners for 30 minutes to an hour for whitening strips, on top of the time they’re already out for meals and brushing, you may not be meeting the minimum wearing time required for successful treatment. Consistently falling short of the required wearing time can slow your tooth movement, extend your treatment duration or compromise your final results. Invisalign is a modern orthodontic solution that straightens teeth discreetly using clear, removable aligners.
But there is good news for North Tampa patients who want to whiten their teeth during Invisalign treatment. Your Invisalign aligners themselves can actually serve as whitening trays. Instead of using whitening strips, you can use whitening gel designed for tray based whitening. You place a small amount of whitening gel inside your clean aligners and then wear the aligners as you normally would. This way you can whiten your teeth while still meeting your required aligner wearing time, making it much more compatible with Invisalign treatment.
At Miller Orthodontics we can guide you on which whitening products to use with your aligners and how to use them. It’s important to use the right concentration of whitening gel and the right amount. Using too much gel or too strong a concentration can cause sensitivity and gum irritation. We recommend starting with a lower concentration whitening gel and using it for shorter periods to see how your teeth respond before committing to a full whitening regimen.
Timing is another consideration. Many orthodontists recommend waiting until you’re at least partway through your Invisalign treatment before starting to whiten. This is because your teeth may shift during treatment and if you have attachments bonded to your teeth for Invisalign, the areas under those attachments won’t whiten. Whitening too early could result in uneven coloring that would need to be corrected after the attachments are removed. We can advise you on the best time to start whitening based on your specific treatment plan. Invisalign for Teens is designed to fit growing smiles while allowing flexibility for school, sports, and daily activities.
Some patients prefer to wait until their Invisalign treatment is completely finished before whitening their teeth. This way ensures that all attachments have been removed and your teeth are in their final positions, so you can whiten all tooth surfaces evenly. You can then use professional whitening treatments or over-the-counter products without worrying about how they interact with your orthodontic treatment.
If you do choose to whiten during Invisalign treatment, oral hygiene becomes even more important. Whitening can cause temporary tooth sensitivity and combining it with orthodontic treatment requires keeping your teeth and aligners very clean. You should brush thoroughly before applying whitening gel to your aligners and make sure your aligners are completely clean as well.
Not everyone is a good candidate for teeth whitening during orthodontic treatment. If you have sensitive teeth, existing dental work that won’t whiten, or certain dental conditions, whitening might not be appropriate for you at this time.
