When people think about getting their teeth straightened, one of the first things they want to know is how long it will take. We get it, you want to see the final product because you are investing time and money. We always give you a timeline at Miller Orthodontics based on your individual situation. Treatment time can vary greatly for each person.

There are many factors that will determine how long you’ll need to wear Invisalign. The biggest one is how complex your case is. Someone who just needs to close a few gaps or straighten a few teeth may only need 6-8 months. If you have more serious issues, like severe crowding, big gaps or trouble with how your teeth fit together, you may need 12-18 months or more. Some cases take 10-14 months to complete, which is in the middle.

We’ll do a full exam of your teeth and bite on your first visit. We can learn a lot about how your teeth are aligned by using digital photography. This allows us to create a plan for your treatment that’s custom to you. We can tell you how long your treatment will take with this plan. We want you to know what to expect from the start so there are no surprises later. Another big factor that affects how long treatment takes is how well you follow our instructions. You need to wear clear aligners for at least 22 hours a day for them to work. That gives you about 2 hours to eat and brush your teeth. If you wear your aligners every day as prescribed, you’ll stay on track with your schedule. But if you forget to put them back in after meals or leave them out for a long time, your treatment will take longer than intended. We’ve seen patients have to stay in treatment for months longer than intended because they didn’t wear their aligners enough.

You also need to change to new aligners on time so your treatment can continue. You’ll wear each set of aligners for 1-2 weeks before moving on to the next one. We’ll let you know exactly when to make these changes. Some patients try to speed things up by changing to new aligners too quickly but this can cause problems. Your teeth need time to adjust to each part of the movement. You won’t get the best results if you rush through the process.

We check on you often during your treatment. During these visits, which happen every 6-8 weeks, we check to see how your teeth are responding to the aligners. Sometimes we find teeth are moving faster than we anticipated and we can finish sooner. Sometimes we have to adjust the plan if things don’t go as planned. These check-ins help us make sure you’re following your treatment plan and fix any problems before they get worse. Braces for Adults deliver precise, effective alignment solutions for lasting confidence at any age.

Age can have a little impact on how long treatment takes. Teenagers and younger patients tend to see results faster because their bones are still growing and their teeth move more freely. The difference isn’t so big but adult patients take a little longer. We’ve treated patients of all ages here in North Tampa and no matter how old you are, the results are worth the wait. Some people want to know if there’s anything they can do to speed up their treatment. The most important thing is to always wear your aligners. Also, keeping your tongue clean and coming to all your regular appointments can help you make progress without anything getting in the way. We also recommend you keep your aligners safe by putting them away carefully when you take them out and not putting them in hot water which can bend the plastic.

You’ll start wearing a retainer after your active treatment is over. This isn’t part of the treatment plan but it’s really important that you do this next. The retainer holds your teeth in their new position so all the time and work you put into it doesn’t go to waste. Most people wear their retainer all the time for a few months. They only wear it at night after that.

We’ve treated hundreds of patients with clear aligners at Miller Orthodontics and we know it takes time to see results. But most people say time flies by faster than they thought, especially since the aligners don’t get in the way of their daily routine. Schedule an appointment if you want to know how long treatment will take for you in North Tampa. We’ll take a look at your teeth and give you a personalized plan so you can decide what to do next.
